Short-term Care:

These homes provide housing to children as an adjunct to the Polinsky Children's Center, which is the main shelter for San Diego County. These children will be placed with us only until a more permanent placement option can be found for them.

Long-term Care:

This facility is designed as a more permanent placement for children who have demonstrated a need for more intensive services than foster home or relative care has been able to provide. Residents work on their social and functioning skills, learning more appropriate means for handling their emotions. They attend public school and can participate in extra-curricular activities when appropriate. They also participate in weekly groups and counseling sessions at the facility.

Emancipation:

In California eligibility for services terminates at age 18 and only extends to age 19 under limited circumstances. Studies have shown that youth exiting the system at age 18 are ill prepared for life on their own. Roughly 40% of them end up homeless and many others become part of the criminal justice system. At one of our facilities, Mi Casa operates a focused Independent Living Skills program for older teens. The goal of the program is to help the residents succeed in achieving the skills necessary to live on their own and sustain themselves by the age of 18.

Probation:

We offer the same housing program for youth who are under the supervision of the Department of Probation and have come to us from Juvenile Hall. These youth have not committed a violent offense and have been transferred to the placement unit of the Department because the court would like to see them placed in a structured, safe group home setting. These youth often have histories that do not differ from the residents in our other programs. They work on the same skills, educational goals and independence goals as our other residents. In addition, they are offered drug classes and gang diversion services when necessary.

THP-Plus:

This program was designed to provide affordable housing and comprehensive supportive services for up to 24 months to help former foster care and probabtion youths ages 18 to 24 make a successful trasition from out-of-home placements to independent living. The goal of the program is for youth to graduate from the program and have stable, permanent and affordable housing.
